A review on the 2009 National Breeders' Conference
by Pyramid Society member Debra Charnuski
Joe Ferriss began the conference with a discussion on Egyptian Arabian Strains and Families. This is a fascinating topic and Joe has a wealth of knowledge and information. He began with reminding us that the identification of a horse's lineage is done through dam (mare) lines. A horse's strain was very important to identifying a horse to the tribes. Certain strains are acknowledged for being more prepotent than others in throwing forward certain traits or consistency of features. Joe ended his talk by challenging us breeders to look at the bigger picture - to be forward looking in our breeding endeavours in order to take a serious look at experimenting and using lesser known popular strains....Continue Reading

Saracen Farms
Helgrit Hepner
In the early years, seeing *Khofo and *Serenity Sonbolah made Helgrit Hepner aware of the beauty and refinement of Straight Egyptian horses and the goals she was striving for. Since Straight Egyptians were out of their budget at that time, they purchased a 75% Egyptian filly, Ruminaja Ghalima (Ansata Ibn Halima Gahlii Rifala). Then, Shaikh Al Badi came into their lives. They bred Ruminaja Ghalima to him and their first foal, Saracen Karim became a forced to be reckoned with in New Zealand.
Saracen Farms subsequently produced numerous Top Ten National, Regional and Egyptian Event Champions in Halter and Performance, all with Shaikh Al Badi as their sire, including: Saracen Celim, Saracen Sahib, Saracen Salima, Saracen Samiha, Saracen Supreme, Saracen Hawke, Saracen Saber and Saracen Fanci. All that from a foal crop of typically no more than one to three foals per year!
In 1988 at the Bentwood yearlings sale, a filly by the name of AK Desert Nouara (Shaikh Al Badi x AK Nouara) caught Helgrit's eye. However, being the second highest filly at the sale, she was out of her reach. As luck would have it, however, two years later she was offered on a lease basis. Nouara became the Straight Egyptian seed mare that Helgrit had been searching for.
After breeding to various stallions, Helgrit decided to search for a stallion of her own that would meet her stringent criteria. She came upon a colt by Imperial Baarez at AA Arabians in Texas. "I loved his sire, but had never seen his dam. So, since we do not purchase horses that we have never seen in the flesh, a trip to Texas proved very profitable for us. One of our breeding philosophies is that we never breed to or purchase a stallion with a dam of questionable quality or bloodlines." Upon seeing BW Sensational's mother, JD-SH Reba, Helgrit was firmly convinced that he would prove to be a worthy breeding stallion for her mares, AK Nouara, several of her daughters and Ravenwood Sharmea (RG Al Mone x JED Nashrafa).
Helgrit purchased the immature colt and has watched him grow into the wonderful, kind horse he is today. His foals are proving to be as good or better than expected. They are typey and correct with gorgeous heads. "It is so exciting to see them born and develop into lovely young horses."
Helgrit Hepner has been an active member of The Pyramid Society since 1985. "The Pyramid Society provides a venue to show and market our wonderful Straight Egyptians, and we will support The Society as long as we are active in the Arabian horse business. We are looking forward to many more exciting years ahead."
