Izzy’s Story
Izzy’s Story
The morning of July 5th, as I was driving down the hill from the house, I saw "Izzy" IsisMaree (Abraxas Prince x Khartel Malika) standing in a pasture between the creek and the barn. I noticed as I went down the hill that she was watching me but not moving. I decided to stop at the barn and walk toward her in the pasture to see what was going on with her and she just kept watching me. As I got close, I could see she had her right hoof turned under and her knee and elbow bent! She started eating grass when I got to her but would not move.
I managed to get her to hop with me about a block distance to a barn stall – and called the vet! I made her comfy with food and straw, but she colicked just before the vet arrived. After he got her calmed down and the colic treated, he found no cuts, bruises, or swelling, nor was anything fractured.
He diagnosed that she must have been kicked or bumped hard above the elbow and apparently had nerve damage. He suggested she be put down. I said, “No way,” and he said he would come back in a few days. He brought another vet when he returned. He still gave the same prognosis that she be put down, since she could not walk. In the meantime, I had ordered Platinum Performance and antioxidants, including vitamin E, having been involved with Alamo Pintado in California. In fact, Izzy had been there when she was born! I also had heard about Jamie Roberts using herbs for horses, and she suggested herbs that would help the body use its own stem cells more efficiently. So I decided Izzy needed that as well, and the veterinarian at Platinum checked all ingredients so there would not be a conflict. After only a few days with the herbs, I noticed a slight change, in that the hoof was not bent back as much.
Over the following weeks – little by little – she seemed to bend the elbow and knee and foot less and less. It was near the end of August that I saw her put weight on the right foot and lift the left foot. She had atrophied some on the right foot, but gradually that normalized, and her walk became smooth. Soon she was given more space and was gleefully running! Even today, she will kick out and run circles around me. It seems she is saying, “Thank you.” She seems to be her old self and does everything like a normal horse again! She is truly a gift. It was so worth spending hours tending to her, laying down with her, and encouraging her when she seemed to have a setback.
It is amazing how amazing these horses really are. Izzy truly seems to appreciate every day more than ever, as do I. Needless to say, I have a new vet!
