Laurie
Schmelzle grew up in Miami, Florida. Beginning in 1982, she began
showing Arabian horses as a junior exhibitor, and from 1985-1987 she
trained and showed Egyptian Arabian horses for Pyramid Society
founding members Willis and Jimmie Flick of Glenglade Arabians.
Beginning in 1987 Laurie attended Florida International University,
Florida State University, and UCLA, where she studied fine art,
philosophy, and biology.
In 2000 Laurie and her husband Martin developed a business
partnership with world renowned chinchilla breeder Jim Ritterspach,
and established Chinchillas.com. In 2005, Laurie began work with New
York based miniature sculpture artist Barbara Scott Fisher, and they
developed the Chinchilla Millennia line of limited edition precious
metal sculptures mounted on an assortment of fine jewelry items.
Barbara sculpted and cast the miniature chinchillas, and Laurie
designed the jewelry. Their next endeavor is to develop a similar
line of items portraying the Egyptian Arabian horse.
Laurie has been a student of Egyptian Arabian horse breeding for 25
years, and especially admired the herds of Ansata, Gleannloch,
Glenglade, the Klines, and Plum Grove. Laurie and
Martin own 2 straight Egyptian Arabian mares, and are currently
establishing their breeding program named Al Badia. To learn
