2008 Donation "Native
Costume" - By Maria D'Angelo |
| |
Maria D’Angelo feels as if she
were born with a pencil in her hand, a pencil with a propensity for
the Arabian horse. Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, owning a
horse was out of the question for Maria, but capturing them on paper
created a connection to the horse that has lasted her a lifetime.
Maria studied art in college, but
attributes her skills to natural ability and self-teaching, rather
than formal education. She has spent many hours at riding stables
watching horses, learning how they move and understanding their
muscular structure. Learning every tiny detail, including veins in
their face and whiskers on their muzzles is fundamentally important
to Maria. “I think this is the most important thing an artist can do
- really learn their subject. Learning each subject’s personality
and expressions is also important because every single animal is
different”, Maria expressed regarding the importance of detail.
Graphite is the medium of choice
for Maria, due to the amount of control a pencil provides. Recently
she has begun exploring the utility of colored pencils. Maria’s
donation to the 2008 Egyptian Event is “Native Costume”, a beautiful
graphite piece of an Arabian in traditional costume. |
